Burmese Architecture
Much of Myanmar’s surviving architecture showcases the
country’s Buddhist heritage. In each region, you’ll find a
plethora of sacred temples, golden stupas, and impressive
monasteries. Moreover, a number of these sacred sites
draw inspiration from architecture in India and Sri Lanka.
Traditionally, secular structures were constructed from
wood, and many of these buildings did not survive the
ravages of time. Myanmar is also home to intriguing
examples of British colonial architecture, especially in the
major cities. An AAT Myanmar architecture tour will take
you on a journey through centuries of history as you visit
the country’s most significant masterworks.
Explore some of Myanmar’s stunning Buddhist structures in Bagan, an ancient city with over 2,000 temples scattered across vast plains. Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is an especially important Burmese architectural work. This dazzling gilded stupa is bell-shaped, and according to tradition, each Burmese king was required to add his weight in gold leaf to the exterior. Nat Taung Kyang Monastery is another must-see site. This ancient wooden monastery is truly magnificent; there are stunning multi- tiered towers that ascend to the sky, and intricately carved flames and birdlike creatures adorn the roof.
In Yangon, uncover traces of Myanmar’s British colonial heritage at the Yangon Central Post Office, a striking brick building accented with rows of arched windows; the Strand Hotel, similar to London’s Strand and with rich teak doors and a marble atrium; and Bogyoke Aung San Market, known for its central dome and ornate, half-moon arches.

"Fantastic experience, very well organized in every detail. Vietman is not rich of historical sites, but a country that entertain the visitor with all aspects of their culture. More than a tour it has been a holiday. I enjoyed a lot entertainment as painting mask and cooking lessons."
