Sacred & Spiritual in Myanmar
Exhausting all of Myanmar’s sacred and spiritual sites
would take multiple lifetimes! Even a quick jaunt to
Myanmar reveals the country’s rich religious heritage since
Buddhism finds its way into many aspects of Burmese daily
life. Buddhist monks occupy a place of honor in Burmese
society, and it is not uncommon to see young men in
burgundy robes walking through the streets. In the city of
Bagan alone, there are over 2,000 pagodas scattered
across vast plains, which seem to stretch into infinity. Yet,
temples define more Burmese cities besides Bagan. In
major centers like Yangon and Mandalay, you’ll discover
cherished sites like Mahamuni Buddha Temple and
Shwedagon Pagoda, arrayed in layers of shimmering gold.
Shwedagon Pagoda is one of Myanmar’s most famous Buddhist temples. It’s not difficult to see why; this 350- foot-tall gilded stupa is over 2,500 years old and encrusted with precious gems. Shwedagon houses precious relics including strands of hair from the Buddha. Another must- see Burmese sacred site is Kyaiktiyo (Golden Rock) Pagoda, one of the country’s most important pilgrimage sites. This massive rock is covered in countless layers of gold leaf and balances precariously on the edge of a cliff -- truly, there is no religious landmark quite like it in the world. Other especially noteworthy Burmese sacred sites include Sule and Phaung Daw Oo Pagodas, and Phaung Daw Oo is where one of Myanmar’s most important festivals is held each year.
