Best Times to Visit Laos
Laos’s climate is pretty simple, because it is the only landlocked country in
Indochina. Without coasts nearby, Laos' climate is slightly more predictable
than those of surrounding Southeast Asian countries. Laos' is home to two
distinct monsoon seasons: the wet season from May to October, and the
somewhat drier season from November to April. The volume of rain also varies
by region, however, the rainfall rarely last more than a few hours and the
country turns verdant and lush during the rainy season. The seasons bring its
own benefits.
Altitude affects temperatures in Laos, with elevated areas enjoying cooler
weather. Laos is home to higher regions in the north, center, and east.
Lowlands are concentrated in the south.
Check out this Laos month-by-month guide below to learn more about the
general weather conditions:
Laos Travel Month-by-Month Guide
Throughout the year, Laos as a whole experiences
different seasons and types of weather. Typically, festivals
and holiday celebrations come and go as the seasons
change, therefore it is best to plan ahead so you can get
the most out of your Laos vacation. Please refer to our
weather guide below:
January
Visiting Laos in January
If you are travelling Laos in January
it is unlikely that you will encounter any significant rain,
if any. In the capital, Vientiane, or Luang Prabang
average temperatures should be in the mid 20°C, a few
degrees below those in the regions to the south. One of
the significant factors to remember in January is that if
you intend to head to the north and east for hiking and
trekking, or plan a Mekong cruise via Pakbeng, night
time temperatures will average 15°C and much lower in
Phongsali.
