century.

EXPERIENCES
Bangkok is the capital and by far the largest city in
Thailand and its many attractions justify a few days,
even
if your ultimate destination is a beach elsewhere in the
Country. At All Asia Tours, we can ensure that you see
the
highlights of Bangkok which frankly can be a confusing
place if you are visiting without any guidance. It is a
hectic
place but with a little planning, using different forms of
transport, you will be able to navigate the place when the
traffic almost looks gridlocked. The Sky Train, the river
ferries and Tuk-tuks are just three of the forms of
transport available.
It is a city that combines 21st Century skyscrapers with
stunning temples, each with a rich history. The local
markets are fascinating and the cuisine of the highest
possible standard. Every top international hotel chain has
a
presence in Bangkok and few cities offer as much good
shopping as here. That means the latest fashion in the
stores in modern malls, and market clothing at
competitive
prices. The Chatuchak Weekend Market is open air and
sells everything you could imagine; you will need to
negotiate over prices but bargaining is part of Thai
culture.

Built in the 17th century, the Grand Palace complex is truly stunning. This snow-white building, accented with vibrant shades of orange, emerald, and glistening gold, boasts unique architecture that blends traditional Thai styles with influences from the Italian Renaissance. Near the complex, discover the mint, ministries, and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). The Grand Palace Thailand was once the heart of the Thai Kingdom. Today, the palace is still used for special occasions, especially the robe changing ceremony for Wat Phra Kaew’s Emerald Buddha statue. This beautiful Buddha statue dons different sets of gold robes for the summer, rainy, and cool seasons. If you choose a Grand Palace tour package, you will be overwhelmed by the beauty of these striking monuments.

In the late 18th century, Wat Phra Kaew history began when King Rama I first declared Bangkok as Siam’s new capital. Today, this iconic temple continues to be heralded as the center of Thai Buddhism and is also home to the Emerald Buddha -- the country’s holiest image. This stunning Buddha sits in a meditative position, and it was carved from a single block of jade in the Lanna style of Thailand’s north. The Wat Phra Kaew Emerald Buddha not only remains an important part of Thai religion but also a quintessential example of the country’s vibrant history and culture. In addition, this magnificent Buddha statue and historic temple are found on the grounds of the Grand Palace. Located in the heart of Bangkok, the Grand Palace is an especially impressive example of traditional Thai architecture. You must stop by to see the country’s most important relic.

When it comes to Bangkok sightseeing, the beautiful temple of Wat Pho is an absolute must-see. Not only does Wat Pho hold the biggest collection of Buddha statues in Thailand, but it is home to a striking Reclining Buddha -- a gold statue that stretches almost 50 feet (15 m) high and 150 feet (46 m) long! Equally impressive are the Buddha’s feet, adorned with intricate mother-of-pearl inlays that illustrate specific bodily features of the Buddha. Continue exploring Wat Pho chapels to see more beautiful golden Buddhas seated in the lotus position, as well as multicolored murals that depict former lives of the Buddha. Wat Pho is also home to charming Chinese statues that were used as ships’ ballasts from the maritime trade between Thailand and China many centuries ago. As with most sacred sites in Southeast Asia, please remember that the Wat Pho dress code asks visitors to dress modestly.
From 1350 to 1767, Ayutthaya was the ancient and mighty capital of Siam. In past centuries, Ayutthaya’s location near China, India, and the Malay Peninsula also made it a thriving trading center. Merchants from all around the globe traveled to this major metropolis, and Ayutthaya became one of the world’s largest cities. At its peak in 17th century, the Ayutthaya Kingdom expanded its power into Laos, Cambodia, and Burma (Myanmar). However, when the Burmese invaded at the end of the 18th century, many of Ayutthaya’s buildings were burned down. After major restoration work, UNESCO recognized the cultural value of these remaining ruins and granted World Heritage status to the city. Today, awe-inspiring Ayutthaya ruins, as well as Ayutthaya Historical Park’s temples and palaces, still remain beautiful and majestic. Ayutthaya is also easily accessible from Bangkok, so a one-day Ayutthaya tour is an excellent option during your Thailand trip.

The historic city of Ayutthaya was one of Thailand's first capitals, a prosperous trading center, and considered one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. In fact, during Ayutthaya Kingdom’s peak in the 17th century, the city was greater and more magnificent than London! In 1991, Ayutthaya ruins received a well-deserved UNESCO World Heritage status for preserving authentic forms of Thai art and culture. When it comes to the best things to do in Ayutthaya, many of the city's attractions demonstrate how central Buddhism has been to Thai life for generations. The best temples to see in Ayutthaya tours include Wat Si Sanphet (formerly the Royal Temple) and Wat Mahathat in Ayutthaya Historical Park. Enjoy an unforgettable day in this historically-rich town, where you can discover awe-inspiring temples and marvel at beautiful Buddha statues. Another benefit of visiting Ayutthaya is that it’s a great jumping-off point for exploring nearby landmarks, such as Bang Pa In Palace in the south.
Sukhothai travel itineraries give tourists a glimpse into another ancient Thai capital. In the 13th century, the Sukhothai kingdom flourished under King Ramkhamhaeng. He is credited with creating the Thai alphabet, and his inscriptions are considered to be the first Thai literature. Foundations in religion, language, and the arts were established during this period and continue to influence contemporary Thai society. Today, remnants of this golden kingdom, also known as Sukhothai old city, have become popular tourist attractions. Sukhothai’s cultural heritage is best seen in the old temples and monuments scattered throughout Sukhothai Historical Park. In fact, these ruins have earned UNESCO World Heritage Status based on their outstanding historical value. During Sukhothai tours, discover the ancient temple of Wat Mahathat, a spiritual and administrative center of the capital. This beautiful building is also known for its lotus-motif pagodas, stunning Buddha statues, and lovely moats covered in lotus flowers. You will be amazed at how prosperous this kingdom was in centuries past!

The ruins at Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserve the culture of Siam’s most prosperous eras. This historic site in Sukhothai has many highlights, and the Sukhothai kingdom is considered to be a golden age of Thai architecture and art. The park’s central zone, where the impressive Wat Mahathat Sukhothai temple is found, is truly stunning. Here, discover a grand stupa that is surrounded by a host of spires, beautiful Buddha statues, and intricate bas-reliefs of monks praying -- true testaments to the splendor of the period. In addition to the striking remnants, you can also find intriguing paintings, sculptures, and decorations. Unsurprisingly, this historic site is believed to have been the spiritual and political center of Thailand’s ancient capital. In addition, Sukhothai Historical Park spreads across approximately 27 square miles (70 sq. km). This spaciousness allows for plenty of room to explore historical remnants and the park’s lovely natural scenery, including lotus-covered pools, flowing canals, and plenty of lush greenery.
Chiang Rai, a region in the northernmost corner of Thailand, is surrounded by lush landscapes and gently- flowing rivers. Chiang Rai is also home to the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. This area was once infamous for its opium production, but today, the Golden Triangle attracts tourists with its pristine nature and variety of wildlife. For curious travelers, Chiang Rai, Thailand is ripe for exploration. Wat Rong Khun, also known as Chiang Rai White Temple, is considered to be one of Thailand’s most beautiful temples. In addition, this northern region’s diverse population includes several ethnic communities. Explore local villages and meet hill-tribe peoples who still preserve their traditional lifestyles. Chiang Rai is also home to northern Thai cuisine, which is distinctly different from what you’ve sampled in the past. As you look out at this region’s picturesque rice paddies, note that sticky rice -- not jasmine rice -- is a staple in the north. If you seek authentic, local experiences, try a northern Thai cooking class. The food here is influenced by surrounding countries, and compared to other Thai regions, tends to have milder flavors, relies on seasonal ingredients, and often includes generous portions of pork and dried spices.

Northern hill tribes and villages are accessible from Chiang Rai through scenic countryside towns that border Laos and Myanmar. A hill tribe village tour provides a unique chance to learn more about the traditional daily lives of hill tribe peoples. Nestled among spectacular forest-covered mountains, these communities still lead simple farming lifestyles. For a truly immersive experience, explore the dramatic landscapes and visit the hill tribes in Thailand -- including the Padaung long-necked people and the Karen people -- who wear colorful garments and jewelry. Make the most of this rare and rewarding opportunity to learn more about unique cultures and ways of life so unlike your own.

The historic Golden Triangle region is infamous for its opium and drug trade, which sustained the economy until 1980s. The Hall of Opium, Thailand will teach you a great deal about this drug, which has been used throughout the world for centuries. Focusing on the past and present, the Hall of Opium Museum shines light on the opium wars and warlords, smugglers, and the effects of this potent drug. Compared to the Hall of Opium, the House of Opium Museum is fairly small and includes a collection of opium memorabilia, as well as the farming tools used to plant and harvest the crop. Whether you visit one or both museums, each provides an excellent look into the history and culture of this notorious narcotic.
The Golden Triangle, Thailand is located at Sop Ruak on the border of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. Until the late 20th century, this region was notorious for its opium production, but today, natural beauty is its main charm. Golden Triangle tours offer expansive stretches of mountain landscapes, rolling hills, and rivers that are truly breath-taking. This region is also home to traditional villages and hill-tribe peoples who wear colorful clothing. At a hill-tribe village, immerse yourself in the lush greenery and enjoy a simpler and more relaxed way of life. When you take a boat tour along the peaceful rivers, see wilderness, rice fields, and local life in Thailand on one side, and Myanmar or Laos on the other side. You can uncover historic treasures, including old temples and museums, in the nearby town of Chiang Saen. While there are far fewer hotels in this part of Thailand, you have the option to stay in luxurious tented camps where you can ethically interact with elephants.

Golden Triangle tours reveal some of Thailand’s most interesting destinations. This region, located on the borders of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos where the Nam Ruak and Mekong Rivers meet, was once known for its opium production. Yet today, it attracts tourists for its vast expanses of untouched nature. Journey to the heart of this remote area where various species of wildlife wander through the spectacular landscape. When it comes to elephants in Thailand, you can try a genuine elephant experience at an ethical sanctuary, where the happiness and well-being of these majestic animals are top priorities. You can help bathe these gentle creatures or take a walk with them through their natural habitat. Golden Triangle hotels are fewer and farther between than other areas in Thailand. Instead, the northern border has some unique and luxurious tented camp lodges that offer once-in-a-lifetime experiences for travelers with adventurous spirits.
If you’re looking for a balance between city life and picturesque countryside, head to Chiang Mai -- Northern Thailand’s major hub and home to 170,000 people (a fraction of Bangkok’s population). One of the best things to do in Chiang Mai is to explore the lovely natural environment including towering mountains and verdant forests. Chiang Mai also offers a slower, more relaxed pace compared to Thailand’s capital. Once you’ve had the chance to soak in the stunning natural wonders, spend some time visiting hilltribe communities near the city and visiting ancient temples, such as golden Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep.

Wat Chedi Luang's history began at the end of the 14th century, during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma. Surprisingly, this Lanna-style stupa is still the largest building in town, despite an earthquake in 1545 that destroyed part of its majestic spire. In the 1990s, Wat Chedi Luang Chiang Mai underwent renovations to restore some of its original majesty. Make your way to the center of old Chiang Mai to explore this atmospheric temple. Here, you can witness local monks completing their daily work and view a jade replica of the legendary Emerald Buddha. (The original Emerald Buddha was once held here but now resides in Bangkok). You'll also want to take note of the Wat Chedi Luang dress code. Please make sure to dress modestly, as when visiting most sacred sites in Southeast Asia.

Built toward the end of the 14th century, Wat Phra Doi Suthep Temple is a sacred Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai that is perched at the top of a forested mountain. Without question, the wat is one of the most magnificent temples in all of Chiang Mai; it boasts a dramatic location, a traditional Lanna-style stupa, and abundant gold that glitters brightly in the sun. In a Wat Phra Doi Suthep tour, trek up the 300 steps to the temple’s terrace and glimpse spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The interior of Wat Phra Doi Suthep also displays traditional Thai architectural features. You’ll find exquisite décor including Buddha images and brightly-colored murals. Discover an Emerald Buddha statue (a replica of the original in Bangkok) in a stunning, semi-translucent jade green with gold embellishments. As always, please make sure to follow the Wat Phra Doi Suthep dress code and wear modest clothing.
Siem Reap, Cambodia is the gateway to Angkor Wat Temple: a striking example of Khmer architecture and a celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Angkor Wat's unparalleled religious and architectural importance also make it one of world’s greatest treasures. During your Angkor expedition, stay in Siem Reap -- a charming riverside town that is ideal for a short break. You'll find luxurious Khmer-style accommodations, as well as stylish cafes and bars inside French-colonial buildings. True to the city's spiritual heritage, you'll see monks in orange robes walking along the narrow streets, as well as thriving markets with friendly locals. Siem Reap is also a major center for Cambodian culture, both past and present. Witness the impressive craftsmanship of traditional silk-making and lacquerware techniques. Today, Khmer creative expression also flourishes in Cambodia's growing contemporary art scenes. Local artists run innovative boutiques that offer unique goods, and when it comes to theatrical arts, talented Cambodian youth shine in Phare Circus performances. No matter which attractions you choose to see, be sure to experience authentic Siem Reap as it comes alive against the backdrop of astonishing Angkor temples.

When it comes to Southeast Asia's highlights, visiting Angkor Wat Temples is at the top of many travelers' bucket lists. Angkor Wat is the centerpiece of the UNESCO-recognized temples of Angkor -- a well-preserved reminder of the Khmer Empire's former grandeur. It comes as no surprise that Angkor Wat tours provide fascinating insights into bygone eras. At least once in your lifetime, see this massive temple complex in silhouette before it shines with the golden light of early morning. As you witness a beautiful sunrise over Angkor Wat, be prepared for a truly unforgettable moment. Over the centuries, overgrown foliage has interwoven itself into the picturesque temple of Angkor Thom. And, if you're looking for less touristic Angkor complex ruins, venture to the hidden gems of Banteay Srei and Banteay Samre to see exquisite salmon-pink sandstone carvings.

Embark on a Tonle Sap tour to see the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. The Tonle Sap's climate is relatively predictable with two distinct seasons (wet and dry). The lake fills to the brim during the rainy season, and in contrast, it can shrink down to just a few feet during the dry season. A cruise through this great lake will take you past Tonle Sap floating villages, home to people whose livelihoods depend upon the fishing and agriculture that these waters provide. Explore Tonle Sap Lake to learn more about Cambodian village life, mangroves, and the stunning bird sanctuary that is situated in this peaceful region.
Whatever your preference, there are countless ways to
explore the colonial city of Luang
Prabang, and a Laos tour package will take
you
to this essential destination. Former royal capital Luang
Prabang is now one of the best-preserved historic towns
in
Southeast Asia. In 1995, this lovely town was declared a
UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its stunning
cityscape that boasts a fusion of Lao and French-colonial
architecture, as well as exquisite temples and shrines.
As
you stroll through the small-town streets, the
surrounding
scenery has a colorful, patchwork-like feel. Make your
way
through the cobblestone alleys past Lao-style homes with
blooming bougainvillea plants, glittering wats (Buddhist
temples), and towering colonial buildings.
Luang Prabang's iconic temple architecture includes the
stunning Vat Xieng Thong, one of the city's most
beautiful
temples; Wat Mai, once the home of the cherished Phra
Bang Buddha image; and plenty of other small temples
and shrines. And at dawn, monks clad in vibrant orange
robes walk along the avenues in silence during the daily
practice of morning alms -- a centuries-old ritual. You
feel
a sense of nostalgia while in Luang Prabang, a charming
town where time passes slowly.

Luang Prabang waterfalls are spectacular. The Kuang Si Waterfalls, located approximately 18 miles (29 km) from Luang Prabang, are some of the most gorgeous in the world. A Kuang Si Waterfall tour will take you to this majestic three-tiered waterfall which boasts turquoise waters that cascade 160 feet (50 meters) down. The falls collect into pools, and the cold waters are great for a refreshing swim. You can simply relax and enjoy this sublime setting if you wish. If you need to stretch your legs, take a trek to explore the streams that feed the main waterfalls.

Traditional Buddhist ceremonies are an important part of daily life in Laos, and one of Luang Prabang's attractions is the daily ritual of almsgiving. At dawn, monks in tangerine-colored robes emerge from temples and travel through the streets of Luang Prabang in silence, accepting offerings of rice and fruit from faithful pilgrims. Even during wars and periods of political conflict, morning alms in Laos has thrived for centuries. Tourists and non- Buddhists are also welcome to participate in the ceremony. Appropriate attire is required including long pants or skirts, and shirts that cover your shoulders, arms, and torso. You are also welcome to watch this sacred ceremony unfold and take photographs from a distance, but these activities should be done as discreetly as possible.

The Royal Palace in Luang Prabang is a must-see during your Laos vacation. Built in 1904 for King Sisavangvong, the building is set on lovely grounds and now functions as a museum. The Royal Palace Museum (National Museum) is a great destination to explore; it provides an introduction into the past royal family’s history, and its collection of murals and gifts from foreign countries is extremely well-preserved. Some of the museum's highlights include the king's car collection, as well as the highly-revered Phrabang Buddha.

Arguably, Wat Xieng Thong in Luang Prabang is the city's most iconic and beautiful temple, overflowing with religious and historical significance. Wat Xieng Thong, Laos was originally built in 1560, and the temple has since undergone numerous revisions and restorations. Today, this almost 500-year-old complex remains well-preserved and is one of the most significant centers of religious worship for the Lao people. Since Wat Xieng Thong Temple is located close to the Mekong River, it is also seen as the gateway to the city. The building itself exhibits traditional Lao architectural styles and is home to a striking 'Tree of Life' mosaic, intricate carvings, and a massive funeral carriage that measures almost 40 feet (12 m). One of the building's many highlights includes the exquisite Reclining Buddha. Dating back to 16th century, this elegant statue is considered to be one of the greatest Buddhist artworks in all of Southeast Asia.

Wat Mai Buddhist Temple is not only one of Luang Prabang's largest temples but one of the most visually-stunning buildings found in Southeast Asia. This Buddhist temple in Luang Prabang is a major focal point during the Lao New Year when the Phra Bang -- one of the most sacred Buddha images in Laos -- is on display for a ceremonial cleaning. Wat Mai Temple in Luang Prabang was built during the 18th century by King Anurat and has also been the home of Sangkharat, Lao Buddhism's highest dignitary. In addition, Wat Mai is famous for its exquisite sim (ordination hall), which has a five-tiered brick-red roof, elegant carvings and scrollwork, reliefs that depict narrative scenes, and generous flourishes of glimmering gold. Without question, this spectacular temple is one of Laos' national treasures.

"Here are the best parts of the tour. I liked the local cooking class and the Irrawaddy cruise, but my favorite was the Inle Lake Fishing Village. It felt like I was seeing the real Myanmar for the first time. And I have to talk about the Bagan Balloon ride. Totally worth the extra cost. Currently looking into a custom tour through Cambodia with AAT for next year, so I’d definitely recommend them!"

"We wanted a tour with a smaller group and AAT got us a tour through Vietnam with just 4 other travelers (8 total!). Most people don’t know smaller groups means more access! And AAT got us into more local, authentic activities that are closed to the bigger groups! The “Cai Be” Cruise in Mekong was my personal favorite, it felt like I was seeing a more hidden part of Vietnam. The relaxed pace, the fun guides, I’ll never forget this trip."

"We enjoyed this tour very much, and that was because of our tour guides and drivers. Our group guide in Laos was particularly amazing. She handled all the questions, pointed us toward all the best restaurants, gave good suggestions for what to see on the free day, she even helped us to get medicine at a local pharmacy! She made our time in Laos very great for us. The low point for us was the hot temps in Cambodia, but we still loved Angkor Wat!"
